These days on Blue Bay Farms are mostly spend in the fields. Roguing seed potatoes is a very important job. The job consists of finding virus infected potato plants, and then remove them from the field.
The top picture shows the roguing crew. From left to right: Rebecca, Tineke, Pete, Marten and Klaas. The empty seat is mine.
These pictures were taken in the field in front of our house. The variety is Prospect. A processing variety.
And this is a picture that shows a Mosaic plant. A potato plant infected with PVY (potato virus Y). You can see how much smaller the plant is. It is going to have a small yield. Therefore it is not desirable to have these in a potato field. That is why we rogue them out.
The last picture shows Prospect on the left and Yukon Gold on the right. In the background you can see all the mussel buoys in the bay.

well I must say, I feel very educated on the subject..no wait I know that stuff already, I feel refreshed just like Im back in that seat again. If I was someone that heard about this for the first time, I cant think of a better way to explain how rogueing works..you are such a smart Dad. So what is comprible to a Prospect? Did you have them last year? I have to admit, I liked rogueing, it was good exercise and the carts always kept things interesting, but once you have digging pictures up, I am really going to be craving the feeling of satisfaction lifting monster rocks off the belt, that smell of fresh PEI dirt, long nights, and beautiful dirt red potatoes! I miss the farm quite often. I love you very much! Think of me while you are out in the nice weather over there!Have a Hoot! Love you lots! Dianna
Glad so see how far along things are with you guys and what you are spending your daylight hours on!!
We (craig and I) could pick out the diseased plant right away with your list of symptoms....
Love ya, Tetcy
Nice pictures Randall. Marten is sitting beside me and he agrees. :) He said he tried real hard to look like he was working in that picture. :P
Thanks for the lesson. I agree with Dianna.
I agree with Dianna too. Rogueing was always my favourite thing too. But I think I told you that before... As always, thanks for your pics. They remind me of home. Sometime soon, I hope we can get back for a visit. Well, I know I've neglected my own blog for ages but you've inspired me to update mine.
Love you!
